About "colour maps"

Post by Albus »

Guys, I would like to know your opinion about "colour maps" (https://worms2d.info/Colour_map). In case anyone doesn't know, to activate the "colour map", go to map editor, leftclick on the map symbol to see how it looks like and then rightclick on that icon again.
In my games I am thinking to ask if my opponent accepts to play on "colour map".
Two positive points of that in my opinion:
1) the player will be able to see 100% of the map in the lobby, so that he will have more parameter to know if the map is bad or good in order to tell if he agrees or does not agree to play on the map.
2) It seems that "colour maps" help to avoid "invisible pixels" (it is rare to happen, but I attached a situation like this that happened to me in the league). I will attach an example of a situation where an invisible pixel occurred in a match.

I talked about it in CWT site and lacose said that:
"It turns maps into PNG doesnt it? Then it shouldnt be legit"

I said:
"Lacoste, are you saying that because the player could use that for playing in a previous saved map? If that is the reason it would not be a problem. The person just need to generate random maps in the lobby until stop in a good map and only after that transform it into a colour map".

If there is no downside, could the player have the right to ask for a "colour map"? The issue of invisible pixels I recognize that although possible, it is rare to happen. In my opinion, the best point about it is that the player will have a complete view of the map, the quantity and arrangement of objects on the map etc, in order to say if want another random map or not.

This is not a bad idea, let this rule work, but only if both players agree.

Thing is, turning .LEV map into PNG changes soil background to none and soil outline color to grey. While this doesnt affect the physical aspect of the gameplay, it surely affects the norm to which people are used to and it may cause misunderstandings. Some people are conservative/picky about changing the standards, including myself, so this alone is problematic enough. The workaround for that is to save previously generated .LEV map, then convert it to PNG to show it to other players in game lobby, then load previously saved .LEV map without making further changes, however this method might still feel fishy for some people since we are unable to verify a map 100% without a bit of work, but that's just extra paranoia. Still, I think its fine if both players agree for that method, but we shouldnt force people for extra hassle, and (when it comes to PNG soil changes) we for sure cannot change some standards that we had since the begining - that includes the "how the game looks for viewers on stream/replay".

Agreed with lacoste. The only possible reason for me to use png maps would be when you have wkTerrain.

What about the "invisible pixel" issue? Apparently, it happens only in the hell texture because of the soil background that wouldn't exist if we play on a colour map. I don't know if you saw the replay I attached. The pixel that I hit in this replay is completely invisible to the naked eye due to the soil background of the hell texture. Although it is not common to happen, there is a possibility. Imagine an important game being influenced by this? My solution would be to play in a "colour map", but since there is no consensus, would there be another solution? What I am going to say now is not my personal opinion or suggestion, but as a curiosity, would you guys think it reasonable for the player to have the right to refuse to play in the hell texture because of the "invisible pixel" issue?

Its a whole different story that some WA map themes are far from being completed or thought out. It sucks, but we shouldnt change the standards because of 2 or 3 broken themes. I for example limit myself to half of the themes in my games, i prefer having less "complete and balanced" themes than a rollercoaster of good themes, boring themes and broken themes at random.

Well... my final opinion or suggestion is that the player has the right to demand not to play on the hell terrain or to play on hell terrain but with colour map. It is unreasonable to require the player to have to accept having their plays negatively influenced by a pixel invisible to the naked eye.

I agree this, thats why elite players play only on "fruit" maps :) but only if both players agrees on that
